QB Johnathan Lewis commits to Rutgers

Rutgers landed the top quarterback on its board today when St. Peter’s Prep junior Johnathan Lewis decided to spend his college career in state and announced his plans to be a Scarlet Knight.

Lewis held a Rutgers offer for quite a while, dating back to last year. However, the installation of a new power spread offense and the addition of a new coaching staff made a big difference.

“Rutgers has a new offense that I really like. And coach [Drew] Mehringer and I have a close connection,” Lewis said. "When he comes to see me, he doesn’t talk about straight football and recruiting. He will talk about life in general and how I am doing and how I am doing with my grades and stuff.”

The coaching staff also made no secret that Lewis was their top choice over the last few months.

Lewis admitted that helped sway his decision.

“Rutgers has always said that this decision is mine. It’s all for me. Whenever I wanted to commit, they would still have a spot for me. They would even have one for me if I decided to go to another place.”

Over the last few weeks, the RU fans and current commits have also done their part in showing Lewis just how much he is wanted.

“It is a real benefit because it shows who wants you and how much of an impact I will have in the community there.”

Playing close to home also proved to be a factor.

"I like that it's close and that my parents can always come watch me play," Lewis said.
